Diploma in Nautical Science
The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year, pre-sea training course designed as the first step for aspiring seafarers aiming to become deck officers in the merchant navy. At Pacific Marine Academy, this course is a cornerstone of their offerings, providing a focused and intensive preparation for a dynamic career on the high seas.
The DNS program is structured to transform a student into a competent and knowledgeable deck cadet, ready for the challenges of shipboard life. The curriculum is meticulously crafted to meet the stringent standards set by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India, and other international maritime organizations. It covers a wide range of subjects essential for safe and efficient ship operations. Students delve into the principles of navigation, mastering the use of charts and modern bridge equipment.
They learn about seamanship, including rope work, anchoring, and handling various types of vessels. Safety is paramount in the maritime industry, and the course places a strong emphasis on international regulations like SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and MARPOL, along with training in fire fighting, first aid, and survival techniques.
A key feature of the DNS course is its practical-oriented approach. After completing the one-year pre-sea training at an approved college, students embark on 18 months of mandatory onboard training as a deck cadet. This is a crucial phase where theoretical knowledge is applied in a real-world setting. Cadets gain hands-on experience in bridge watch-keeping, cargo handling, and general ship maintenance.
Pacific Marine Academy’s role in this journey is to provide the foundational coaching and guidance necessary for students to secure admission into a reputable maritime college and to gain sponsorship from a shipping company. The academy prepares students for the competitive IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) and the rigorous sponsorship exams and interviews conducted by shipping companies. They offer a structured curriculum, experienced faculty, and mock interviews to build the confidence and knowledge of their students.
Upon successful completion of the onboard training and various examinations, the cadet is awarded a Bachelor of Science in Applied Nautical Science degree by the Indian Maritime University and becomes eligible to appear for the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) examination. This certification is a globally recognized passport to a career as a Third Officer, the first step on a clear and progressive career ladder that can lead to the prestigious rank of Ship Captain. The Diploma in Nautical Science, as facilitated by Pacific Marine Academy’s preparatory coaching, offers a fast-track entry into a rewarding career filled with adventure, responsibility, and the opportunity to travel the world.
